Celebrations of Rashtriya Ekta Divas on the occasion of 141st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The High Commission of India in London commemorated the 141st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Tuesday, 1st November 2016 at India House along with members of the Indian community.  This day is being celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Divas (National Unity Day) to honour the contribution of Sardar Patel in safeguarding and protecting the territorial integrity as well as the unity and diversity of the nation.

The ceremony commenced with paying tributes to Sardar Patel by garlanding his bust at the Chancery premises.  This was followed by an address by the Acting High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik.  In his speech, the Acting High Commissioner spoke of the incalculable gratitude India owes to the sterling efforts by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in ensuring that a partitioned India remained a united and strong nation.

Representatives of associations in UK following the teachings of Sardar Patel like Sardar Patel Memorial Society UK and National Association of Patidar Samaj also spoke at the event. They paid homage to the leader and cited anecdotes from his life describing his manifold virtues.

 A documentary film on the life of Sardar Patel titled ‘A man of silence – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’ was also screened for the benefit of the audience.  The documentary focussed on the life of Sardar Patel and the contributions he made to the freedom struggle of India as well as after Independence that earned him the title of the ‘’Iron man’’ and threw light on the sacrifices he made in his personal life.

Around 150 members of the Indian community attended the event and were highly appreciative of the event.
