The 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar

14 April 2016 marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. To commemorate the occasion, the High Commission of India organized the following activities: The event was inaugurated at 10 King Henry Road, Chalk Farm, London where Dr. Ambedkar lived from 1921 - 1922. Deputy High Commissioner (DHC) Dr. Virander Paul paid homage along with the High Commission officials, Mayoress of Camden Ms. Larraine Revah and members of the Federation of Ambedkarite and Buddhist Organisations (FABO)-UK and representatives of Guru Ravidass Sabha. In his remarks, DHC said, “This home holds a very special place in the life and legacy of Dr Ambedkar and therefore in the hearts and minds of Indians.”

Afterwards, DHC and the members of the High Commission gathered at Gray Inn with Chief Executive/ Treasurer and senior members of the Honourable Society of Gray Inn, where Dr. Ambedkar received his Bar-at- Law. This was followed by a visit to London School of Economies (LSE) which hosts a bust of Dr. Ambedkar. DHC and the LSE Director & President Craig Calhoun along with South Asia Centre Director Dr. Mukulika Banerjee paid their tributes to Dr. Ambedkar.

In the evening, a reception was organised at Ambedkar Hall, India House. A gathering of more than 200 people, including community leaders, mayors, councillors, academicians, members of the FABO, UK and representatives of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha attended the event. The event started with floral tributes to Dr. Ambedkar’s bust and chanting of prayers. In his opening remarks, DHC lauded the role of Dr. Ambedkar in making of our Constitution followed by Lord Navnit Dholakia’s keynote speech on Babasaheb’s contribution to Indian society and on the role of constitution in a parliamentary democracy. A presentation was made by Prof. Mukulika Banerjee on Dr. Ambedkar during his time in LSE. Brief remarks were also made by FABO President Ms. Santosh Dass and Shri Guru Ravidass President Mr. Jograj Ahir.
