Martyrdom Day Observed in London

Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary known as Shaheed Divas or Martyrdom Day was observed in a traditional manner at Tavistock Square in central London at 1100 hours on January 30. The event was jointly organized by the Borough of Camden Council, the India League and the High Commission of India in the UK.

The dignitaries who attended and spoke at the event included Satya Narayan Gourisaria, a Gandhian and the former Secretary of India League; Ambassador Rajesh N. Prasad, the Acting High Commissioner of India; Councillor Abdul Quadir, the Mayor of Camden; Manab Majumdar, General Secretary, India League; Joginder Sanger, Chairman, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan; Dr. M.N. Nandakumara, Executive Director, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan; as well as officers and functionaries of the Indian High Commission and India League besides media personalities and prominent members of the Indian community in London.

Rich tributes were paid to the Mahatma and his message; and his bust was garlanded. Devotional songs 'Vaishnav Jan To....' and 'Ram Dhun' were sung and their meaning explained by Dr. Ghatak.
