Visit of Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon'ble Minister for Commerce & Industry, Government of India to London in October 2014

Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon'ble Minister for Commerce & Industry, Government of India paid a visit to UKduring October 27-28, 2014.During her visit, the Hon'ble Minister, participated in the Investors' Seminar organised by the High Commission of India at India House on October 27, 2014.On the occasion, she held discussions with investors in the UK on the Government of India's newly-launched 'Make in India' campaign, a major national program designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development and build best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure in India. The ensuing Q&A session provided for a productive interactive session on a range of issues such as facilitating ease of doing business in India, simplifying and rationalising the tax structure and furthering reforms in the economic sphere.The Investors' Seminar was well attended by around 50 senior level representatives from UK India Business Council, Business Chambers as well as UK corporate houses operating in India.

During her visit, The Hon'ble Minister called on Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable, UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. During the meeting, a number of issues of mutual concern to India and UK with regard to the bilateral economic relationship were discussed.

On October 28, 2014, the Hon'ble Minister participated inthe Milken Institute's London Summit 2014.The Hon'ble Minister addressed the audience from London's economic & financial community during the session on “Global Overview: Geoeconomicsvs Geopolitics”.Mr Alexander Yakovenko, Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ms Marisa Drew, Managing Director, Investment Banking Division, Credit Suisse, Ms Anne Richards, Chief Investment Officer and Executive Director, Aberdeen Asset Management PLC and Francine Lacqua, Anchor and Editor-at-Large, Bloomberg Television were the other panellists at the session.

En suite, the Hon'ble Minister attended the Institute of Director's 14thLondon Global Convention on Corporate Governance & Sustainability. On the sidelines of the Global Convention, she addressed at the Global Business Meet. Rt. Hon. Baroness Verma Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Energy & Climate Change, Government of UK, Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt, Chair, UK India Business Council (UKIBC), Lt Gen J S Ahluwalia, PVSM (Retd) President, Institute of Directors, India were also present during the Global Business Meet.

The Hon'ble Minister was also invited to speak at the newly launched ‘India Debates' forum at the House of Lords. The unique forum is set up for Indian and British leaders of politics and opinion, industry and commerce,media, culture and academia to meet and debate on key issues of common concernand the impact of new developments on the global order. The ‘India Debates' forum was convened by academics from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, and was hosted by Lord BhikhuParekh of Hull.

Besides meetings with leaders of various Business Chambers in London, the Hon'ble Minister also addressed the media during a briefing session at the High Commission of India, London during which she addressed a number of significant issues.
