About the Library


The Library at the office of the High Commissioner for India came into existence in 1920. When the High Commissioner’s Office moved into India House early in 1930, these facilities were made available to readers and public. India House Library serves as a reference library for political, economic, commercial and cultural maters on India.


Library Collection


India House Library of HCI, London has total collection of over 20,000 books, a veritable treasure. Its gallery leads to a high vaulted library full of book shelves. Purchases are made from time to time from among non-official works appearing in India, Europe and elsewhere. One room is set apart for the Survey of India maps, which numbers more than 7000 very old pre-independence maps of India and its neighbouring countries published by Survey of India 1945 under the directions of Brigadier Sir E.O. Wheeler, M.C., Surveyor General of India, printed at Photo Litho Office, Survey of India Calcutta. Library has also well maintained presentation books collection to promote aspects of Indian history, Indian culture, art, tradition, economy, polity etc. in UK. These books are used for presentation purposes to dignitaries. These books are also presented to Schools, Colleges, Universities and Institutions/Associations.


Library Services


India House Library serves as a reference library. Library provides up-to date information on India-UK relations, Indian history, Architecture, Culture, economy, literature, tourism, Films, Indian Constitution etc. Reference queries received in person, by phone, by mail or by e-mail time to time from various schools, Colleges, Universities, Institutions/Associations.
