Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations at India House, High Commission of India, London on April 14, 2015

As is customary to annually celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at India House, the High Commission hosted a public event to mark Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 124th birth anniversary on April 14, 2014.

Over 250 invited guests, including community leaders, mayors, councillors, academicians, members of the Federation of Ambedkarite and Buddhist Organisations (FABO)-UK and representatives of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha attended the event.

The High Commissioner of India garlanded the bust of Dr. Ambedkar that was followed by floral tributes to Baba Saheb by prominent dignitaries and other invitees. After a Buddhist prayer and a recitation of Bhim Stuti by a group of young students, the High Commissioner made his initial remarks, highlighting the significant contributions made by Dr Ambedkar to India. In the context of Dr. Ambedkar being the architect of the Constitution of India, the High Commissioner recalled that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, replying to the recent discussion on the motion of thanks to the President's Address in the Lok Sabha, had said: “The only religious book is Indian Constitution, only prayer is welfare of all”.

Eminent historian and political philosopher, Lord (Professor) Bhikhu Parekh delivered the Keynote Address inter alia describing Dr. Ambedkar as one of the greatest intellectuals and academically the most accomplished political leader not only in India, but the entire world.  This was followed by speeches by Ms Santosh Dass, President of FABO-UK, Mr Jograj Ahir, President of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha and Ms. Gira Ashok Chakravarty, Public Affairs Executive of FABO-UK.

All presentations focused on the life and legacy of Dr. Ambedkar, including his strong determination and firm commitment to social justice, as a prolific writer, distinguished lawyer, intellectual, political leader and scholar. Dr. Ambedkar was remembered with deep respect and gratitude for his historic contribution in the making of the Constitution of India.
